With my holiday vacation quickly approaching its end, I'm quickly trying to wrap up as many knitting projects as humanly possible. My current infatuation is my new knit hat that takes a page from the Roaring 20's:
Side Slip Cloche by Laura Irwin
Needle: 6
Yarn: Rowan RYC Soft Lux, avocado
Skeins: ~1.5
This was a quick and simple knit, but definitely does not look boring. The ingenious construction (knit the band first, pick up stitches and knit the body and crown) piqued my interest and propelled me to finish the project. The pattern was well-written and straightforward so that I made no alterations.
The yarn, Rowan Soft Lux, was...interesting to work with. I would say the yarn has an overall aran-weight thickness; however, the fiber is wound with a metallic thread thereby giving the yarn a thick-thin, inconsistent weight. Even the fiber felt strange; it felt more like a felted yarn. I would work with this yarn again (quite improbable, since the yarn has been discontinued) but with smaller projects. I almost had a conniption after blocking; I think I over-stretched it such that it was loose and looked huge on my head. I threw myself at the mercy of the gods and did the only thing I could think of: I threw it into a pot of scalding water and kind of swirled it around the sink, hoping that it would tighten, but not totally felt, the fibers and reblocked it. Fortunately my last-ditch effort worked and I ended up with a snug and well-fitting hat.
I had noticed on Ravelry that some knitters had accessorized the hat with buttons and other baubles that looked really cute. Therefore, I pinned a cameo that I had laying around and voila! Overall I love this little hat, particularly that bit of frippery by the side of the face. Adorable and totally vintage; just my style.
