Butterfly Effect

Happy Halloween, my lovelies!

Yep, it's been a while. Same old story; grading undergrad's homework has eaten a significant chunk of my time this semester. :-/ Also, I've been trying to keep dry in the wake of Hurricane Sandy. Fortunately, we weren't hit as badly around my parts but the total shutdown of the NY Transportation System has left me stranded. The upside? I get to finish some of my knitting. Here is my latest:

Butterfly Lace

Lace Beret by Kate Gagnon Osborn
Needle: 1, 3
Yarn: Knit Picks Gloss Fingering, Kenia
Skeins: 1
Size: Small

This particular issue of Vogue Knitting (Fall 2009) has been one of my favorites and as such, I've knit a number of items from it. This hat initially caught my eye, but I was apprehensive to take on such a complicated stitch pattern. I shouldn't have been such a wuss; this pattern (as all of her patterns, see Selbu Modern) was incredibly well written and intuitive to follow. I definitely have to tackle more of her patterns, maybe a garment this time (hello, Adelaide!).

Because the pattern was pretty much perfect, I didn't make any modifications. I did however, increase one needle size in order to turn this hat from beanie-size to beret slouch. I think it was pretty effective. This hat would make lovely holiday gifts; they look complicated, use relatively little yarn and it's a hat! Everyone needs a hat, yes?

I had already used KnitPicks Gloss before, so I knew what I would be dealing with: a nice, springy yarn with good sheen and stitch definition. I will say that this is slightly thicker than other sock yarn I've used before; I would classify it more like a sport-weight yarn. Also, the colors are fantastic; you can't go wrong with Gloss.

On to more knitting (and hopefully a few book reviews too)...
