Knitting, and other forms of crafting, works:
- as a form of meditation (which itself has shown to reduce stress and inflammation)
- to activate the parasympathetic nervous system (the "rest and digest" response)
- as a natural anti-depressant (i.e., leads to an increase in dopamine release during performing of the activity as well as when admiring the finished product later on)
- to prevent cerebral atrophy and dementia (because crafting stimulates the use of many areas of the brain such as working memory, attention span, visuospatial processing, creativity, and problem-solving abilities)
Although I haven't checked the actual paper and its experimental validity, I'm going to go ahead and assume that the science holds up. :)
